about

Between the years of 2016 and 2018, I wrote music that I--despite years of playing and writing--could finally say I was truly proud of. The music manifested itself as three different projects:

1. Schoolmates
2. Sonic Pines
3. Serene Divide

This music was written in a variety of solitary rooms between my childhood home in Felida, a small apartment on 9th ave in Seattle, and my first tiny rental house in Auburn. That is why I felt the need to give this album its dorky name--because it was recorded as I moved all up and down the Cascade Range. It is all far from perfect. Listening back now--as if I didn't notice it then--the various faults in timing, mixing, and vocal effect implementation (damn you, reverb) are all quite stark. I was still learning how to make this stuff work, and I still am! However, I wouldn't have these songs any other way....probably.

I never had a suitable singing voice, and the music I was writing required talented singers. I also figured the music would sound best with female accompaniment. Because of this, I commissioned a few of my (incredibly patient) friends to lend me their lungs to record these songs.

I never intended to group all of these tracks together, because they have always defined themselves as separate projects in my mind. After all, they were produced during different points in my life. Despite them all being released within two years of one another, the music and ideas have been coming to me for the past four or five years--and realistically speaking, a lot of growth and change came to me in those two years alone. All things considered, I found myself driving on 167 North the other day, playing all of these songs in chronological order. That's when it hit me: I now view all these pieces as something to be categorized in the definite past. I am separate from them now. The guy plucking away at those strings is not the same person typing this miniature essay. That might sound stupid or pretentious--or perhaps both, but it's the truth. Because of this, I now find it appropriate to put them all together in this...EP?

I hope you enjoy it.
